Fit means something different to everyone. It comes in all shapes and sizes and is perceived differently depending on your age.
But we can all pretty much agree that when you’re “fit,” it means you’re healthy.
You watch what you eat, you incorporate exercise into your daily life, and thus you have a decent amount of endurance and strength.
Even though fitness can be achieved by different means, there are a few habits most fit people have in common. Many healthy and fit people I know do these things. And it shows!
So let’s go over the habits of these people and see if you’d be able to incorporate them into your own life (if you don’t already!).

Healthy Habits of Fit People
They make their exercise a hobby
Whether it’s training for a 5k or attending a hip hop spin class, fit people tend to find an exercise they love. After all, that’s the best way to get yourself out there day after day.
Nowadays, there are so many options for exercise. If running on a treadmill or lifting weights doesn’t at all entice you, try one of these ideas:
– Attend a zumba class
– Take a kickboxing class
– Go on hikes to new parks every week
– Get a personal trainer who’ll help you switch things up
– Follow along with a YouTube workout
They take the stairs
Okay, I know. This isn’t exactly a new tip. But it’s definitely still underrated!
Because it really does add up.
For example, I currently live on the fourth floor of my apartment building. Every time I take my dog out, I take the stairs. This means that about four times a day, I walk up and down four flights of stairs. I get so many more steps in than I would if taking the elevator.
So at the mall, try opting for the stairs over the escalator. At work, choose the stairs instead of the elevator.
If you don’t already, make the stairs a regular part of your routine.
They have a fruit or vegetable every meal
Personally, I feel so much better if I have at least one fruit and/or vegetable at every meal. So it’s now a habit to include them when both cooking and eating out.
For example, rather just spaghetti and meatballs, try adding a salad, side of steamed broccoli, or a mix of bell peppers and onions into the sauce. It’ll ramp up the nutrients, fiber, and your fullness!
And no, corn and potatoes don’t count. A bummer, I know.

They plan ahead for unhealthy food sabotage
Going on a trip? Really busy at work? Have a family member’s birthday coming up?
Plan ahead! Most fit people have a game plan when it comes to these types of events.
If you have a trip on the horizon, prepare food ahead of time and bring it with you. Account for snacks, and include both savory and sweet options. This will prevent you from unhealthy impulse purchases.
Likewise, if you know you have a busy week coming up at work, try your hand at meal prepping. Not only is it crazy time efficient, it’ll keep you eating healthy all week!
And if you have a family/friend/coworker celebration, here’s what most fit people do…
They say “no thanks”
Unless the celebration is for you, ignore the unhealthy food options. Someone has a birthday or anniversary every day, which often becomes an excuse to eat unhealthy every day.
It’s our norm to get sugary treats for the person of honor, but they’re just that: treats for that specific person.
These are the events that can really sabotage your otherwise healthy lifestyle.
Make it a habit to walk by the communal office candy bowl without taking a piece. Fill up your plate with vegetables and watermelon at summer barbecues. And refrain from eating cake at your coworker’s birthday party.
These little healthy habits of fit people are what help them become and stay fit.
They allow themselves to indulge
That being said, fit people do indulge themselves every once in awhile. Otherwise you’re setting yourself up for a big binge and falling off the wagon later on.
I stand by what I said, most fit people will hold off on the little sweets here and there. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t have cake at your own birthday party or try a sliver of your grandma’s famous pie when she stops by.
Likewise, if it’s a once in a lifetime sort of experience, by all means, have the chocolate croissant from the Paris café!
But fit people also tend to find a little way to indulge themselves on the regular.
Though it’s important to note…
They tend to have healthy indulgences
Fit people are also likely have healthy indulgences.
Sanne Vloet, a model and healthy lifestyle YouTuber, eats a couple squares of dark chocolate every night while drinking some tea. Personally, I love to have apple slices dipped in almond butter, coconut flakes, and a few chocolate chips.

So find something healthy that still feels like you’re spoiling yourself a little bit. Eat a shortbread cookie with some tea at night or go to your favorite acai bowl place once a week. Do indulge yourself so you’re not left feeling deprived.
And remember: it doesn’t even have to be food related. A calming bath or another simple type of self care could do the trick.
They find people who inspire them
No one, not even fit people, are motivated to follow their healthy habits 24/7. Everyone has unhealthy cravings and gives into them from time to time.
I’ve found it helps to follow people who inspire you. Whether it’s health and wellness YouTubers or a personal trainer at your gym, draw inspiration from them – especially when yours is lacking.
You’ll notice a difference!
They continually seek out inspiration
Your motivation doesn’t just have to come from other people you admire. Set goals, challenge yourself, and set yourself up for success!
